Formaldehyde Linked to Cancer Death / Found in Baby Products

This is particularly concerning to me for those in our breast implant support group, since formaldehyde is a known ingredient in breast implants.

Formaldehyde Linked to Cancer Death

Published: May 12, 2009

Factory workers exposed to high levels of formaldehyde were more likely to die of cancers of the blood and lymphatic system than workers with low-level exposures, according to a study by researchers at the National Cancer Institute.

But the risk of dying of these cancers diminished over time after the exposure stopped, said Laura E. Beane Freeman, lead author of the study, which was published online Tuesday in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Formaldehyde is widely used in manufacturing and as a preservative and disinfectant, although workplace exposures have decreased over time because of tighter regulations. The chemical has long been suspected of playing a role in the unusual number of leukemia deaths among pathologists and embalmers, who are periodically exposed to high levels.

Indeed, formaldehyde is also associated with nasopharyngeal cancer, a disease of the upper part of the throat, behind the nose, and has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. More in the NYTImes article.

Have just heard on noon newscast – investigation being called for into FORMALDEHYDE being in baby products _Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo, some baby oils, wipes, and other products…other companies are also involved. (ABC network) J&J sticks out in my mind because I know they are now manufacturers of silicone breast implants (Mentor)…think we all had a different impression of the company before that ---we'll see which papers report this news –which ones will ignore it. Think about the research Dede turned up about who owns the networks and many larger papers..

I'm sure there will be more on the evening news –and MAYBE in tomorrow's papers???
